We needed our chimneys repointing and reflaunching. The job required a number of different people, but first, we needed a scaffolder to get those people up there. We had two word-of-mouth recommendations, and I called Maclean Scaffolding and one other company to request a quote. The latter two came in at a very similar price, reassuring me it was fair. Of the two recommendations, one quoted a fraction of the price 'cash in hand' (red flag!) and the other quoted without visiting (another red flag!). A previous house I lived in had scaffolding up for months which had cracked the internal walls after enduring a storm - I wasn't taking any chances with dodgy scaffolders. Matt agreed to knock his price down to a nice round number, which helped sway our decision. He'd also been respectful when quoting, ensuring gates were closed behind him so we didn't have to worry about our dog getting loose during her next loo break! The scaffolding was erected quickly and nearly all the tradespeople who used it, whether quoting or working, were complimentary of a decent, solid build. Those who weren’t (one complained about the angle the gate swung at!) were people I wouldn’t be inviting back anyway. The job dragged on and on, way longer than any of us expected. Our house became a landmark – “the house with the scaffolding” – and I began to wonder if it would remember how to stand without it. Winter turned to spring. Some tradespeople turned out to be flakier than a Greggs sausage roll, and finding replacements took time. When the first scaffold came down, Matt shared pictures of the work that had been done. He and his team also made sure that a salvaged chimney pot made it to the top of the second scaffold, ready to replace one that was badly cracked and ready to fall to pieces (much like my hopes and dreams). Thankfully we got to a stage where the second chimney was, we believe, adequately repaired – we opted for an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach by this point. Matt returned and took down the top two levels of scaffold, opening up the roof ready for its replacement tiles. Once that was sorted, he came back for the rest of his scaffold. The price, plus costs for extra weeks, was agreed back in November. Around this time, I fell pregnant, and by the time the job was done, I was nearly two-thirds done making a human being. This project had been the bane of our lives for close to half a year. We knew that meant the costs for the scaffold would have racked up, too. Matt and his colleague came to finish up, and once done, Matt let me know he’d secured the big back gate and I’d be safe to let the dog out. He asked if I knew how much the extra weeks would cost. I winced as I said, “A lot.” My partner and I had estimated that we were due to pay nearly two-thirds extra on top of the initial cost. Then Matt said, “Just give me £X and put the rest towards a treat for the baby,” where X was such a substantial saving that I could tick several items off our list for the baby. I’m not one to get emotional in front of people, so I just about held it together, thanked him for his generosity and said goodbye. Honestly though, it was such a huge weight lifted that as soon as I was safely back inside the house, I let all my pregnant and hormonal emotions out. It’s one of the kindest things someone has ever done for me. I messaged my partner to let him know, and he admitted to getting a bit misty-eyed too. Many tradespeople will charge extra for every little thing they can. 5* reviews don’t always reflect reality, and some minor grievances are greeted by pettiness and lies. I’ve had some astronomical quotes – maybe because I’m a woman, or maybe because we have a big house - but we've stretched ourselves so thin that we can only really cover essential maintenance. Matt hasn’t done any of that: he could have claimed every last penny – and I’d have still given him 5*, because I can’t really fault him for anything – but he chose not to. I hope we don’t have to have any scaffolding up for a long while, but if we do, I know where I’ll be going!
Matt and his team have done a few scaffolding jobs for us now, amazing job as always. Always feel safe when it’s up. All the lads are extremely friendly and helpful. Can’t recommend them enough 🙂 Walkers Decorators
Very affable bunch of blokes, went the extra mile and wouldn't even take a tip. If you're in West Yorkshire, why use anyone else?
Top level customer service. Really appreciated his flexibility. With me being a nightmare of a customer. Always changing plans. And he changed his plans to fit me. Would 100% recommend
Superb service start to finish. Arrived promptly and got scaffold up in no time and even made life easier by repositioning scaffold to help load steel beams up. Recommend highly and would use anytime I need scaffolding.
